Check warranty status. The Virtual Agent is currently unavailable. I've got two new cartridges in the printer. I've used generics for years with no issues. Anyway, the message I get on the external display is "check printer cartridge" and in the HP PSC Series App the error message is "the black print cartridge is faulaty or incompatible with this printer.

But a half hour later when I hit print, it will revert to the same set of problems. Wierd that it will work fine but a half-hour later not. Sometimes if I do numerous resets I can get it to work but after a letting it sit idle for a bit, no go. Not sure if it's related but I noticed that the problems started after I upgraded to Mavericks Go to Solution. I don't have access to any service manuals if they're even out there that I could link you too, but you can try using Google and YouTube to see what you can find for taking apart the printer.

You're right, if you can't fix it, it's going to be recycled anyhow so, why not right? I hope you're able to fix this on your own there Mike and I appreciate your time! Good luck, and feel free to let me know how you get on with the repairs!

View solution in original post. I'm sorry to hear that, but I'd be happy to help you resolve this issue. When you upgraded to Mavericks, did you uninstall the HP software you had and then proceed to install the driver via the Apple updates? It's possible that the software you're using is holding on to some "bad" information which is causing the printer to hiccup occasionally. If this is the case, please follow this Uninstalling the Printer Software document to remove the old software, and then proceed to get the printer installed with this OS X v I removed the old PSC series software as per the instructions but when I go to software update on my iMac there are no HP updates offered.

So essentially I'm driverless. Also, I'm still getting an "E" error message display that says to check printer cartridge. You can download the HP operating system drivers by clicking here. But when i turned on the printer the carriage defaulted to the left side and an error mesage came up to check printer cartridge.

Thank you for the reply again. It definitely is sounding like the issue is hardware related. I don't know if you have had a look at this Blinking Lights document, but it should be able to help you further. In the end I took the HP to a recycling center. Sad, but to go to the next level would have meant a time and bandwidth commitment I didn't want to make.

I was able to borrow an Epson printer-scanner-copier for a long-term loan which will work out for the forseeable future. Pity there are no reasonable repair shops because I feel it was still operable and would have lasted a few more years of light-duty use.
